The Polar Vortex and Winter Weather Safety

It's that time of year again! Most of us have finally recovered from the holiday hangover and life is back to normal. Then it happens: the annual arctic blast that sweeps across our nation, dropping temperatures and dumping snow and ice everywhere (except out West, where an intense drought has set in).

So what's your plan for these challenging days? Grab a cup of tea and see what's new on!

Winter weather safety

Wherever you live, you'll likely experience extreme weather at some point, especially during the storms brought on by our friend the Polar Vortex. Traffic accidents on icy roads and hypothermia from prolonged exposure are just a couple of concerns during a winter storm. We created a disaster preparedness checklist to help you prep for the most common emergencies.

Here are a few items to add to your winter emergency supply kit:

  • Rock salt and sand for icy walkways and driveways
  • Sufficient food and water in case you are isolated in your home
  • Enough warm clothing and blankets for the whole family
  • Heating fuel or battery powered space heaters in case of a power outage

And don't forget about your furry family members! Please make sure to bring your pets in from the cold, and give them a warm and cozy space in your home. Learn more about how to include your pets in your emergency preparedness plan.
