I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come home to find that FedEx, UPS, or USPS has attempted to deliver a package but did not leave it on my doorstep because no one was home. They only attempt delivery so many times, and with a typical work schedule, it can be difficult to be home for every package delivery. A doorbell cam like the one from August allows you to see who is at your door and speak to them. This could’ve saved me the hassle of tracking down where my packages were and how to get them delivered successfully. Find out if you can depend on the August Doorbell Cam to alert you when visitors are at your doorstep.

Before starting the installation process, you should know the internal battery is shipped from the factory uncharged. This isn’t stated in the installation guide, and the doorbell most likely doesn’t have enough power to get you through installation. Before attempting installation, save yourself the headache and charge the battery for an hour or so. You also need a wire crimper or pliers to seal the wires together.
The installation process isn’t easy or fast. The August Doorbell Cam is much larger than the typical doorbell, so it doesn’t fit in every doorbell’s place, and you may have to relocate the doorbell. This process can be tricky since you have to find a location to place the doorbell. Next, you’ll need to establish a Wi-Fi connection. August recommends the Wi-Fi router be within 10 to 15 feet of the door. (If this isn’t possible, then you’ll probably need a Wi-Fi extender.) Finally, install the device.
Included with the doorbell is a tube of duct seal putty. The installation guide that comes with your doorbell doesn’t explain what this is for, and many users end up not using it. However, the putty helps waterproof the doorbell, so it’s an important step to remember. After you’ve attached the wiring, you place the putty around the hole in your wall so the hole is completely covered. We watched many installation videos online, and none of them included this step. This is a step you don’t want to forget. The August website explains how to use the duct seal putty to protect the inside of your wall from the elements.
Our experience with August customer service
I called August to conduct some mystery shopping, and all its representatives were unavailable. It gave me the option to have them call me back or to leave a voicemail. I was a little hesitant about both of these options because my experience with other companies hasn’t been great. Nonetheless, I chose to have August call me back because I didn’t know how long my wait would be and I didn’t want to spend forever on the phone. An August rep called me back within five minutes. I was completely shocked, in a good way. I asked some questions about the doorbell cam, and at the end of our conversation the rep said if I had any other questions to feel free and give them a call back. He was never pushy trying to make a sale. He was genuine and spoke like his only intention was to answer my questions, which I greatly appreciated.
What do users think of August Doorbell Cam?
Overall, reviews of the August Doorbell Cam are fairly positive. Customers rave about the video quality and customer service. The biggest complaints are about the installation process and the fact that it has no night vision.
The august doorbell cam is a very good product, after being installed and setup.. Installing and wiring the door bell is not simple as one might think. The august website provides detailed information on installation of the unit. However it would be helpful to have a working knowledge of electrical circuitry and a basic understanding of carpentry. Absent that it may be difficult..August also provides guidance on how to obtain a professional installer, if needed. Setup was easy and the doorbell cam has operated flawlessly. -Richard M., Amazon Verified Purchase 9/27/2016
Great product, generally works fine. Sometimes when you try to connect with app takes a while to connect. When someone rings doorbell connects much faster. My guess is when the doorbell is pressed the camera wakes up much faster than when you try to just take a look at the front door using the watch live function. My guess is the software will improve over time. This is a cool product and would recommend it. -Mark M., Best Buy 6/9/2016
In theory a great product but it does not connect to numerous door bell chimes, including the more recent “digital” chimes, which is ironic given this is a “digital” doorbell. After two hours of installation, August reps informed me about this shortcoming. Had to return it. -Mark L., Amazon Verified Purchase 5/17/2016
I thought this would work great as I already have the August door lock (which is great), however after installing it the door chime would ring repeatedly. After talking with August support it seems my door chime is digital, not mechanical, and the August Door cam won’t work with digital door chimes. I don’t remember reading anywhere to check this, but it should be more clearly identified. I’ll be returning it. If you have a mechanical door chime I’m sure it would be great, just wish I hadn’t wasted the time. -Don, Best Buy 6/24/2016
Would we buy this doorbell camera?
Overall, we think the August Doorbell Cam is a great choice for those of you wanting to track your package deliveries and keep an eye on your home while you’re away at work. However, the lack of night vision is a big drawback if you want to use it for home security at night, so you may want to look at other options if that is your goal.
