IDShield Review: Identity Monitoring and Protection

Price: Plans start at $12.95
Summary: IDShield monitors personal and financial information and offers a password manager, mobile app, updated credit score, and prepaid legal help through licensed investigators. However, it lags behind competitors by monitoring only one credit bureau.

Overview

In addition to monitoring your personal and financial information for signs of identity theft, IDShield gives customers 24/7 access to private investigators to help out if identity theft does occur. This perk makes IDShield a good option if your information has been breached and you need personalized help getting back on track.

The Individual and Family packages come with the same features, including mobile app access and a password manager. However, IDShield monitors only one of the three major credit bureaus, which keeps us from recommending it unconditionally.

>>If you want a company that monitors all three bureaus, we recommend IdentityForce.

Price

IDShield’s pricing is straightforward and easy to understand: just $12.95 per month for individual monitoring and $27.95 per month for family monitoring. (The family plan includes monitoring for two adults and up to 10 dependents.)

Both packages include all the same features, so you don’t have to worry about expensive upgrades or missing out on essential services—you just have to decide how many people you want covered.

ASecureLife’s take: IDShield’s prices are comparable to other identity protection services, and there are no upgrades, hidden fees, or price hikes after the first year. However, if budget is your primary concern, there are less-expensive options for identity monitoring.

Features

IDShield monitors a wide range of personal and financial information. In addition to continuous credit report monitoring, it’ll scan the dark web to see if your information has been stolen and sold. Here are a few things you’ll get monitored:

  • Name, date of birth, phone number, and address
  • Social Security number, driver’s license number, and passport number
  • Bank accounts (up to 10)
  • Credit card, debit card, and retail card numbers (up to 10)
  • Credit score and report
  • Medical ID numbers
  • Public and court records

Online security: Credentials and social media

IDShield monitors social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn, for anything that poses a privacy or reputational risk to you. It also provides credentials screening, which means if any of your usernames and passwords are used together, you’ll be notified so you can change your passwords right away.

Mobile app

IDShield provides a free app for Android and iOS that gives customers regular updates and access to their credit information. While you probably won’t use the app every day, it’s invaluable to have that direct, easy access to your information and IDShield investigators when you do have an issue.

Password manager: IDShield Vault

One of IDShield’s standout features is IDShield Vault, a password manager that comes with each membership. A password manager encrypts your passwords to protect your information and keeps track of your passwords for you.

While there are other password manager services out there that we recommend, we love that this is an included feature of IDShield’s plans to give you a bit of extra security without charging more for it.

Credit monitoring: Only one bureau

The biggest drawback to IDShield is that it monitors only your TransUnion credit report. Unlike other identity theft protection services, IDShield doesn’t give you the option to upgrade to all three credit bureaus.

ASL Insider Tip

ASecureLife’s take

While it’s true that information is shared between all three bureaus, there’s no guarantee that information will be reported at the same time. Your best defense against identity theft is to catch it quickly, which is why we prefer more comprehensive monitoring with all three credit reports.

24/7 customer service

In the event identity thieves do get hold of your information, IDShield includes $1 million in identity fraud reimbursement to help you recover.

As an IDShield member, you can also consult with a licensed investigator at any time, even if you just have questions about a data breach or suspicious activity on one of your accounts. If you become a victim of identity theft, an IDShield investigator will be assigned to your case to help you through the entire process.

Cancellation policy: Only in writing

If you want to cancel your IDShield membership, you have to do it in writing. There’s no option to do it over the phone or online. While there aren’t many complaints about the company, this is the number-one hang-up customers have.

Our recommendation

If you’ve already been a victim of identity theft and need help with the restoration process, IDShield’s prepaid legal services might be the right service for you. If you have a large family and you want everyone’s information to be monitored, IDShield offers one of the most affordable family plans out there.

With comprehensive identity monitoring, plus a free mobile app for easy access, you can feel confident that you’ll know about any red flags right away. We especially like the included password manager, which other identity protection services don’t offer.

However, with only one credit bureau monitored, IDShield’s monitoring isn’t as comprehensive as we’d like it to be. We recommend using a service that monitors all three credit bureaus like IdentityForce.
