What’s the Best Webcam Cover to Protect Your Online Privacy?

Webcam CoversDid you know that hackers could access your webcam without your permission? Webcams can be hacked by a cyber peeper through any Internet-enabled device. You can be hacked by clicking on spam, visiting a website that contains malware, or having chat programs running on your device. Protect your privacy by covering your webcam when it’s not in use.

What are the top 3 webcam covers?

Below are our top three picks for webcam covers. Our top three were chosen based on price, ability to be removed and reused, and if the cover actually does its job.

  • Winner: camJAMR
  • 2nd Place: SpiShutter
  • 3rd Place: Yilador

Winner: camJAMR

camJAMRCamJAMR has a good reputation with their customers for making quality privacy stickers that can be removed and reused when you are using your web camera. The webcam cover sticker can be used to cover webcam lenses on computers, phones, tablets, game consoles, Smart TVs and more. When you attach the sticker to your device make sure the area is clean. Pull the tab back; peel the sticker off the sheet and place it onto your device. When you need to use your webcam, peel the sticker off of the device and place it back on your sticker sheet. Camjamr covers come in many colors and designs; however, the white stickers do not blend well with the white iPhone.

Price

Cam JAMR has 12 different sticker themes that come in packs of 12 stickers each. There are 9 larger ones made for laptops, TVs, tablets, etc., and 3 smaller ones made for cellphones. Each pack costs $5.95.

Pros

  • Can be used with most laptops, computers, phone, tablets, game consoles, smart TVs, etc. (even blocks dual cameras that are common on smartphones and tablets)
  • Stickers fit under a phone case, and won't stop a laptop lid from fully closing
  • Removable and reusable
  • Claims that the stickers do not leave any residue behind and each one can be used hundreds of times
  • The black stickers blend in perfectly with a Mac, iPad and iPhone

Cons

  • The white stickers don't match the white iPhone well
  • Despite the claim, with stickers there is always risk of some residue

2nd Place: SpiShutter

spishutterSpiShutter is a magnetic metal strip that sticks on to your MacBook Pro or MacBookAir. It’s designed to stay on your computer whether the laptop is open or closed. There is an opening in the middle of the strip that allows your webcam to be used. If you slide the strip to the left or right the webcam is blocked. SpiShutter is promising, but only if you own a 11″/13″/15″ MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.

Price

Spi Shutter is available in black, silver and yellow for $19.99 each.

Pros

  • 1 year satisfaction guarantee with a 30 day money back trial
  • No adhesive so there's no risk of residue
  • Magnet connects to the magnet within your Mac so it can close while cover is on

Cons

  • Expensive vs. competition
  • Only for Mac

3rd Place: Yilador webcam cover

yiladorThe Yilador webcam covers are inexpensive and ultra-thin, and since they come in 3-, 6- and 12-packs you can cover up as many devices as you need with one order. We like that these covers are semi-permanent–you don’t have to remove and re-stick the cover when you want to use your webcam. One side of the cover is open, allowing you to slide the cover back and forth depending on whether you want the webcam open or covered.  With mostly positive reviews, these webcams are a great option for someone that wants to stick it on once, and not have to think about it again.

Price

Yilador webcams are available in a 3-pack for $5.996-pack for $6.99, or 12-pack for $12.99.

Pros

  • Strong adhesive that won't damage your devices
  • Thin profile, allowing for complete closure of laptops
  • Semi-permanent design so you don't have to remove and replace cover when you need to use it

Cons

  • Very small – some users complained it was hard to place correctly
  • Matte black color not aesthetically pleasing for every device

Other webcam blockers we considered

Below are the webcam covers we reviewed that did not make our best of the best list.

C-Slide webcam cover review

c-slideThe C-Slide has different versions to fit different devices. They have specific versions for your smartphone, tablet, laptop, computer and other devices. They offer a cool feature on their 2.0 version, which includes a built-in mirror for those of you who use your webcam as a mirror. However, these devices have a history of breaking easily and sliding open without you wanting them to, so they aren’t the most effective.

Price

  • Webcam Cover 1.0 is made for your laptop, computer or smart TV. It attaches to your device and you can slide it open and closed when you need to use your webcam. It is priced at $5.95 each.
  • Webcam Cover 2.0 has a mirror built into it so if you use your webcam to fix your contact or reapply your lipstick you can do so without letting your webcam be seen. This is basically the same as the Webcam Cover 1.0 but with a mirror built-in and costs $5.95 each.

Pros

  • Works with other external webcams
  • 100% customer satisfaction guarantee, if you aren't happy with your order they will refund it no questions asked

Cons

  • Very fragile so it breaks easily
  • Only fits laptops with flat edges, not curved edges
  • Slides open easily, so you have to check and make sure it's actually covering the webcam

Peep Shield review

peep shieldThe Peep Shield stickers aren’t shaped in circles like the camJAMR. Instead, they are designed in the shape of the, well, shape. For example, there are mustache-shaped stickers, heart-shaped, balloon-shaped, etc. Place the sticker on another part of your screen while you use your webcam and put it back when the webcam is not in use. Peep Shield seems promising, but with their lack of reviews on the Internet, we aren’t sure about their performance.

Price

Each Peep Shield pack comes with 6 webcam lens covers.

  • Designs – Intricate, colored designs (mustache, lips, and bird), as well as basic black and white, come in $7.99
  • Seamless – Basic black and white covers are a dollar less at $6.99

Pros

  • Claims to work on all devices
  • Fun shapes unlike other webcams on the market

Cons

  • Has very little presence (reviews) online
  • As with all sticker-based webcam covers, it's likely to leave a residue

4 Tips to Secure Your Webcam from Hackers

  1. Keep your antivirus software up to date so fewer vulnerabilities are exposed.
  2. Disconnect your USB camera when it’s not in use. There is no way for it to be hacked if it is disconnected.
  3. Avoid opening email attachments from people you don’t know. Unknown emails may contain malware that can be downloaded onto your device the moment you open it.
  4. Do not click shortened links on social media sites. These links can contain malware, just like email attachments.

Miss Teen USA fell victim to a webcam hacker

At just 16 years old Miss Teen USA, Cassidy Wolf, had her webcam hacked for a year. The hacker watched her most intimate moments and conversations and later, images of her were used as blackmail to get her to perform sex acts online. The attacker, Jared James Abrahams, was 19 years old at the time. Fortunately, he was arrested in September 2013 and jailed for 18 months.

It’s sad to say, but these stories are not rare. They are more common than you might think and that is why it’s so important to keep your webcam covered. We at ASecureLife.com urge you to be cautious with your privacy.

What’s wrong with using a sticky note?

Hey, even I’m guilty of this. I was too cheap to purchase a webcam cover and decided to put a sticky note over my laptop’s webcam instead. Not the best idea. There was a sticky residue left behind, not to mention the notepaper lost its stickiness quickly so it fell off often and I was going through sticky notes like crazy! Using other items like tape or stickers that are not made for this function can damage your webcam or fall off, leaving your privacy open to hackers. And that could get very sticky…
