RoboForm Review: Budget-Friendly Password Management

RoboForm may not have the bells and whistles of our top picks, but it’s a decent password management tool with robust form filling tech.

If you’re looking for a multi-platform password manager with impressive form filling tech, look no further. RoboForm is an affordable way to manage your logins and keep your passwords safe on a wide range of platforms.

When it comes to keeping track of your passwords, RoboForm does most of the heavy lifting.

Still, RoboForm is missing some nice-to-haves like its own robust two-step verification options. And while it is affordable, its design and functionality aren’t the most user-friendly. These features keep it out of our best password managers list.

Although you’ll only be able to use it on one device, the free version of RoboForm has some pretty advanced features. You can audit and generate passwords, keep track of your favorite bookmarks, and manage an unlimited number of passwords. And while the interface isn’t super modern, you’ll still be able to secure your passwords, logins, and more.

Unlimited logins

With an unlimited number of logins, you can have RoboForm remember usernames and passwords for as many sites as you need, from your favorite place to online shop to your go-to site to binge romantic comedies. Compared to brands like Dashlane, whose free version limits you to 50 logins, that’s plenty.

Automatic form filler

RoboForm also lets you create secure identities that contain specific personal information. So when you’re upgrading your home with a new security camera, RoboForm will automatically fill in your address and credit card information in less time than it takes to go find your wallet.

Password audit

The RoboForm security center helps you identify which of your passwords are weak and helps you generate newer, stronger ones. To update the passwords, you’ll have to do a bit of legwork and update them manually. It’s not a dealbreaker, but more comprehensive password managers, like Dashlane and LastPass, will automatically update the password changes on popular sites.

Send logins

You can also send one password at a time to friends and family who don’t use RoboForm, which is a good way to offer secure one-time access. Just keep in mind that if you change the password, it won’t automatically update for that person.

Multi-factor authentication
Although RoboForm doesn’t offer its own two-factor authentication app, it does support third-party TOTP (time-based one-time password) based apps like Google Authenticator, Authy, and Microsoft Authenticator.

Compatibility

More than likely, RoboForm will work with your setup. It runs on most browser extensions, including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, and Microsoft Edge. The company assures us it'll work with less common Chromium-based browsers too.

RoboForm also works on most major operating systems, from Windows and Mac to iOS and Android devices. If you’re looking for something to cover a less-than-common phone, like a Blackberry or a Palm, there’s the super DIY KeePass.

Emergency access

You can use RoboForm’s free version to receive emergency access if a family member or friend needs help logging back into their account or in case of an emergency.

Sync across multiple devices

RoboForm Everywhere lets you use your password manager on more than one device, so both your PC and your iPhone are up to date. You can also access any of your information via the web or data backup, so if you’ve left your phone and wallet at home, you can access your credit card information from your friend’s mobile device.

Secure sharing

You’ll also be able to share multiple logins with other RoboForm Everywhere users with RoboForm’s secure shared folder feature. Don’t want them to see everything? You can choose what users can see what and grant specific access levels.

Emergency access

With RoboForm Everywhere, grant emergency access to friends and family you trust to help you when you need it.

Premium support

A paid RoboForm subscription will also get you premium customer support, in case you have any issues or questions.

ASecureLife’s recommendation: RoboForm Everywhere is an affordable way to manage your logins. You’ll still want to pair it with a multi-factor authenticator for extra security, but otherwise it meets the mark.

RoboForm Everywhere Family doesn’t add any bells, whistles, or nice-to-have features. But you’ll get five Everywhere licenses—and all the perks that come with it—which should be enough to cover most families.

ASecureLife’s recommendation: RoboForm Everywhere Family is a decent value and a solid password manager if you want (or need!) to share the wealth.

At $16.70 per year, RoboForm Everywhere works out to be $1.39 per month.That’s a good deal if you're willing to give up more advanced features like encrypted file storage and advanced multi-factor authentication that you'll get with other password managers like LastPass Premium.

RoboForm Everywhere Family covers up to five people for $47.75 a year, which works out to about $4 a month. That’s pretty inexpensive, but you’re also missing out on extra features. The family tier from 1Password is pricier but comes with unique perks RoboForm doesn’t offer.

If you need any help with your subscription or your password manager features, RoboForm offers support in a few different ways. All users—whether you’re using RoboForm Free or RoboForm Everywhere—can use the RoboForm Help Center, peruse the RoboForm manual, or access an online support system 24/7. 

Paid subscribers have priority online support. But if you want to speak to a human, you'll have to settle for live chat support (available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST) or request a phone call.

If you need to cancel your auto-renew subscription, RoboForm has a few ways to do that. And if you forget to cancel before your auto-renew re-ups your subscription, RoboForm offers a no-question asked, 30-day refund.

Overall, RoboForm has decent reviews. Most users say the password manager makes saving passwords easy and convenient, especially because RoboForm does it automatically while browsing.

There are some negative reviews from users saying its automatic renewal makes RoboForm hard to cancel. 

Both RoboForm and LastPass offer password management tools at free, premium, and family levels. But overall, LastPass has more features, especially at its no-cost tier. LastPass Free will let you sync your password across all of your devices, a perk that RoboForm only offers at its paid level.

LastPass also offers a few options for multi-factor authentication at its premium and family levels. You can choose to use LastPass’s own authentication app, a third-party authentication tool, a physical multifactor key on your desktop or laptop, a USB drive on a compatible device, or a fingerprint on your mobile device.

RoboForm, on the other hand, only gives you the option to use third-party two-step authentication.

If you’re looking for a comprehensive and robust password manager, we recommend LastPass. At it’s no-cost level, it helps you to manage and generate strong passwords, and sync them between all of your devices. Plus, its paid tiers include extras like encrypted storage and various two-factor authentication options.

While RoboForm handles the basics of password management well, 1Password offers some unique tools. With the latter, you’ll shell out a bit more cash, but 1Password has its own two-factor authentication tools plus encryption with a secret key—and nobody can decrypt your passwords without it.

With 1Password’s family plan you get item history backup that lets you go back up to a year to recover deleted or changed passwords and a gigabyte of encrypted storage for up to five people

Unlike RoboForm, 1Password doesn’t offer a free version. But you can dip your toes in with a 30-day free trial to see whether it’s a good fit.

Dashlane is pretty pricey for a password manager, especially compared to the very affordable RoboForm. But you’re paying for major features like monitor the dark web to see whether your personal data has been stolen. You’ll also get access to a free VPN so you can surf safely at your local coffee shop.

RoboForm Free is really free. You won’t get all of the perks of a paid subscription, but you’ll be able to use it on one device to secure, manage, and generate passwords.

As far as password managers go, the very affordable RoboForm hits all the basics: it securely stores passwords, automatically logs you into online accounts, and has a robust automatic fill feature that makes shopping and surfing convenient.
