A Secure Life was formed by a group of developers looking to create transparency in the online security industry. Having worked in the web development and security industry for over a decade, we felt like there was value to the research we had conducted when researching particular products and services related to our work at Contract Web Development, Inc. (a web development company, "CWD" for short). Our reviews were initially used only internally, but we felt the public could benefit from them, so we began publishing them. CWD developers built ASecureLife.com so it could host our security reviews. Over time, our "review site" grew into a full-fledged resource on all things security.
Initially our reviews consisted primarily of technology reviews, relating to security software such as anti-spyware, anti-virus software, etc. But with time we've begun addressing related topics in the security industry, including privacy issues, and have branched into other security products as well, such as home security systems, security cameras, and more.
Our reviews are conducted by independent researchers that are hired on a contract basis. Reviews are revisited periodically as products are updated or services improved upon. You can view the last updated time on a review in the upper right corner next to the article title. Why hire researchers? When looking for security products for our own use, we found that the web was saturated by companies promoting their own products, and it was difficult finding an unbiased, reliable review. So we hired researchers to dig deep and find the best products for us. After finding products that suited our needs, we had all this valuable research data lying around. We began to realize the value of this data to others, so we began publishing it.
Yes. If we didn't, we couldn't afford to keep operating and publishing new reviews. Our developers work for a web development company, Contract Web Development, Inc., and our writers and researchers are independent (freelancers). We are not owned by any security companies. We are able to employ our researchers and writers via several revenue streams, which include both online advertising and affiliate marketing. This means we may receive commissions for products or services that appear in our articles. For more information, please read our compensation disclosure policy.
Any website article that allows advertisements on it operates on a similar premise. How? Let's say an article is published about the "best anti-spyware software." If a security company advertises on that page, and a reader subsequently clicks on the ad or purchases the system, the publisher of that article will be compensated. This is a standard business practice, and the revenues help publishers stay in business and provide readers with the most informed reviews. The key to this model being successful is that the reviews remain unbiased and that user comments and feedback are accepted. This is only fair for you as a consumer, trying to make an unbiased purchasing decisions. For review sites that don't follow this model, word quickly spreads, reputations are tarnished, and review sites lose business.
We take great care to research products and services and select winners prior to placing advertisements and affiliate links on pages. Once a review is written, we will attempt to monetize it, so we can pay our researchers and writers and hire them to research and write more reviews. Nevertheless, we always encourage our readers to do their own due diligence, as we would ourselves when purchasing a product. This means researching multiple sources before arriving at a purchasing decision.
Our open comment policy lets people, including competitors, post whatever they want on our review pages. If that wasn't the case, comments and discussions wouldn't be taking place and the integrity of our reviews would be placed in question.
For details on our comment policy, how our reviews are conducted, and how your data is handled, please read our terms of use and privacy policy. And as always, if you have any questions or feedback, you're welcome to contact us.
I am very impressed with this website. I found it accidentally...stumbled on it by accident while looking for something else related to security for homes.
I read a piece about the best systems and then some other articles/ information. You offer a valuable service and it appears you are unbiased. I like that this is not a website owned by a security company in disguise. I found the reader comments to be almost as valuable as the articles!
I am forwarding a link to a friend that is considering buying a home security system.
You offer a valuable service here and I am impressed.
We're glad to hear that you've found this website useful and informative. Thanks for sharing your feedback. A big thank you, as you point out, goes to all our readers and the valuable comments they are leaving. We'll do our best to keep A Secure Life growing, bringing the latest security news and reviews to your screen.
