Buddybar Door Jammer: Best for hinged doors

Buddybar Door Jammer Home Security Door Bar

Key features:

  • Made of steel
  • Extends from 36 to 51 inches
  • Weighs 8.2 pounds

The Buddybar Door Jammer is considered a classic for a reason—it’s simple, heavy-duty, and easy to use. You can install it in seconds and remove it easily when you’re ready to leave the house.

  • Easy to use
  • Safe for multiple floor surfaces (wood, carpet, tile)
  • Adjustable for multiple door heights
  • Heavy-duty for more resistance than a lightweight door security bar

  • Works only when you're inside
  • Costs more than Master Lock option
  • Doesn't work on sliding glass doors

Master Lock Adjustable Security bar: Best for sliding doors and large windows

Master Lock Security Bar, Adjustable Door Security Bar, 265DCCSEN (Single Pack)

Key features:

  • Adjusts for use with sliding doors or hinged doors
  • Extends from 27-1/2 to 42 in
  • Weighs 2.45 pounds

Unlike the Buddybar, Master Lock’s security bar works with sliding glass doors—an important point of entry you shouldn’t overlook if you’re trying to protect your home.

Master Lock’s security bar isn’t as heavy-duty as the BuddyBar (it weighs about six pounds less)—but since it works with sliding doors and hinged doors, it’s a good alternative if the Buddybar is too expensive.

  • Affordable
  • Compatible with sliding doors and hinged doors
  • Adjustable for length
  • Easy to move

  • Works only when you’re inside
  • Isn’t as heavy-duty as Buddybar or Haven Connect

DoorJammer Portable Door Lock Brace: Best for travel

DoorJammer Portable Door Lock Brace for Home Security and Personal Protection

Key features:

  • Is designed for easy portability
  • Works on carpet or hard floors
  • Weighs 8 ounces

A portable door jammer can help you feel safer in an unfamiliar place. Toss it in your purse, briefcase, or backpack before your next trip for some extra security in your hotel room or hostel.

  • Affordable
  • Portable and lightweight
  • Compatible with multiple floor surfaces

  • Works only when you’re inside
  • Isn’t as heavy-duty as Buddybar or Haven Connect

Haven Connect: Best smart door jammer

Haven lock review

Key features:

  • Has a manual pedal lock for easy use inside your house
  • Comes with a mobile app that lets you control it when you leave the house
  • Is easy to install on hard flooring

The biggest drawback to most door jammers is that you can use them only if you’re inside your house.

Haven Connect changes that. This is one of the only door jammers we’ve seen that can be used when you aren’t home. After it’s installed, you can use your smartphone to tell Haven Connect to block the door.

And since it’s a smart device, you can also give digital codes to friends if they’re checking on your home while you’re out of town.

Haven Connect is much more expensive than the other door jammers on this list, so we don’t recommend it for everyone. However, it’s your best bet if you want to physically block your door after you’ve left the house.

  • Works even when you’re not home
  • Withstands extreme amounts of force
  • Works with a mobile app for remote control
  • Offers ability to send digital keys to guests
  • Blends in well with home decor

  • Costs much more than alternatives
  • Doesn’t work with sliding doors
  • Doesn’t work well on carpeted floor

  1. Hey Don, thanks for reaching out. Because a door jam goes on the inside of the door, it might not be the best method to prevent a sleepwalker from getting through it.

I would recommend looking into sensors that can be placed on windows and doors that will sound when they are opened. A great place to start would be by looking into Simplisafe security. Not only are they affordable, but they also let you customize the equipment you need – which means you can pick and choose how many sensors you’d like. Simplisafe also doesn’t use contracts, and is pretty easy to install. You can find more information about them here: https://revert-asl-redrock.pantheonsite.io/simplisafe-reviews/

    I hope this helps!

  2. Kimberly, Great article! I would point out though that if you go to Amazon, and read the reviews on the red Door Jammer pictured above, you will read that many people had that device break in pieces, and not from someone kicking the door – it is made of some kind of iron that is not steel, and parts of it will snap off when it is being installed! Please reconsider recommending it? – Dr. Jeffry Smith

      • Same problem with the Masterlock Dual Function bar: it slides across the floor, having no rubber on the bottom. Lots of one-star ratings on Amazon. I bought the Buddybar Door Jammer on eBay, free shipping, for $79 ($99 on Amazon). Adjustable, twice as strong as anything else on the market. Had a 300 lb. friend try to kick my door in. The door never moved. The Masterlock under the same attempt fell to the floor, useless. You get what you pay for…

  3. Thanks for the suggestions. I didn’t realize there were so many different options for reinforcing a door. I also really appreciate your additional tips, especially your suggestion about adding track lighting on the sides and rear of the house near entries. I will definitely be sure to evaluate the sturdiness of the locks and doors in my home. http://bellowslocksmith.com/handicap-locks/2477329
